Two Basotho killed, six others injured in Florida robbery
Parktown – Two Lesotho nationals were killed and six others injured after they were robbed and shot by three men in Florida on Thursday.
Police have now launched a manhunt and have mobilised maximum resources to trace the trio, also from Lesotho .
The incident happened in an open veld in Florida policing precinct, on Thursday evening.
It is alleged that three armed suspects wearing balaclavas, and were waiting in an open veld in Florida policing precinct, next to an old mine.
A group of eight Bashoto nationals (Zama Zamas), who had just disembarked from a taxi on their way to the old mine shaft, were then accosted by the suspects, who robbed them of cash and cell phones and then shot all the eight Zama Zamas.
Two died on the spot, while the six were taken to hospital. Several firearms and ammunition were recovered at the site of the shooting.
“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or perhaps have information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects, is urged to report to Florida police station or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or give an anonymous tip-off on MySAPS App that can be downloaded from any smartphone,” a statement from the police said.
Gauteng Commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, condemned the violence and vowed to intensify deployments to crime hotspots.
“Investigators must also work around the clock to ensure that the suspects are found and arrested,” said Lieutenant General Mawela.
