SA police shoot robbery suspect dead in raid

An armed robbery suspect identified by the police as most wanted was shot dead on Friday in the Johannesburg high density area of Diepsloot.
Acting on a tip off, the Tshwane and Ekurhuleni tactical reaction teams joint with the Gauteng traffic police closed in on the suspect, who was connected to armed robbery, business robbery, cash in transit robberies and car hijackings- at a home in Riverside View.
South African Police Services spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said upon realising that the police had surrounded the house, the suspect opened fire.

“He allegedly fired one shot, the police returned fire and fatally wounded the suspect,” added Cpt Makhubele.

He said the police managed to recover a bag with nine pistols, two rifles and two magazines with live ammunition.
“A white Mercedes Benz AMG suspected to have been hijacked was also found in the yard,” he said

Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the police seized counterfeit goods worth R38 million yesterday in the Johannesburg CBD.

According to the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, the goods ranged from shoes, takkies and clothes. He urged the community to continue working with the police, “to those who think that the normal day to day police operations are the back burner due to the lockdown must think again, Gauteng is not a place to hide,” Lt-General Mawela said.
